Doha Layover Weather Month by Month

In most cities the season decides whether you go out. In Doha it decides what time of day you go. Your daylight barely moves across the year — three hours between the shortest day and the longest — while the afternoon swings from 21 degrees to above 41.

What the weather does to a Doha layover

One number explains why a doha night layover tour exists at all. The July normal for a Doha afternoon is 41.5 °C, and Qatar Tourism's own advice is to seek shade between 10:00 and 16:00. That is why several of the departures compared here leave after dark, why guides on summer routes carry water and umbrellas, and why a traveller in August described a guide deliberately shortening the walking without shortening the visit.

The consequence for you is practical rather than discouraging. Between November and March, book whatever hour suits your flight. Between June and September, book the evening or the night route and you will see exactly the same stops at half the effort. April, May and October sit in between, and the morning is the part of those days you want.

Doha month by month

Temperature and rainfall below are the Qatar Meteorology Department's normals for Doha International Airport, published through the World Meteorological Organization (temperature and rainfall 1962–1992). Sunrise and sunset are computed for Doha on the fifteenth of each month. Local time does not shift for daylight saving, so what you read is what your watch will say.

January

Doha's coolest month. Afternoons average 21.7 °C and nights fall to 12.8, with about 13 mm of rain across two days. Sunset is at 17:05, so a connection landing after two in the afternoon finishes in the dark. This is the month a daytime walking circuit is most comfortable, and the one where a light jacket earns its place after sunset.

February

The wettest month on the record at 17 mm over roughly two days, which in Doha means one shower rather than a wet week. Afternoons reach 23 °C and evenings sit near 14. Sunset moves out to 17:27. Comfortable in full sun at any hour, and the last month before the walking starts to warm up.

March

Afternoons climb to 26.8 °C and the last of the rain falls, about 16 mm across two days. Daylight passes twelve hours mid-month, with sunset at 17:42. Souq walking is still comfortable at midday, and the desert is at its best before the summer arrives.

April

The pivot month. Afternoons average 31.9 °C, rain drops below 9 mm, and daylight runs to twelve and three quarter hours. Qatar Tourism names early April as one of the two best windows in the year. Midday is still walkable, but shade starts to decide where you stand.

May

Afternoons reach 38.2 °C and nights stop falling below 25. Rain is effectively finished at under 4 mm. Sunset is at 18:11 and the sun is high from mid-morning onwards. From here to September, book the evening or the night departure rather than the afternoon one.

June

The longest days of the year at 13 hours 42 minutes, and no rain at all. Afternoons average 41.2 °C and nights hold at 27.7. Qatar Tourism advises staying in the shade between 10:00 and 16:00. An after-dark circuit reaches the same stops at half the effort.

July

The hottest month on the record: an afternoon normal of 41.5 °C and nights that do not drop below 29. No rain. Sunset at 18:27 means the cooler part of the evening starts late. Guides on summer routes carry water and umbrellas as a matter of course.

August

Barely cooler than July at 40.7 °C, with nights at 28.9 and humidity at its highest. Still no rain. Daylight shortens to thirteen hours and sunset pulls back to 18:10. Indoor stops — a museum interior, the airport garden — earn their place this month.

September

The heat breaks slowly: afternoons average 38.6 °C and nights ease to 26.5. Rain has not yet returned. Sunset moves in to 17:39, so an evening departure now starts in daylight and finishes lit. The last month where the afternoon is worth avoiding outright.

October

Afternoons drop to 35.2 °C and nights to 23.4, with a trace of rain returning. Daylight falls back under twelve hours. Qatar Tourism names late October as the second of the year's two best windows, and by month's end a daytime circuit is comfortable again.

November

Afternoons at 29.5 °C, nights at 19.5, and the winter season opens. Sunset is at 16:46, the earliest of the year alongside December. A daytime tour is comfortable from start to finish, and an evening one now runs entirely after dark.

December

Afternoons average 24.1 °C, nights 15, and rain returns at about 12 mm across one or two days. The shortest days of the year at 10 hours 34 minutes, with sunset at 16:46. A connection landing after two in the afternoon will see the city lit rather than in daylight.

The seasons, and which one you have

Qatar Tourism divides the year simply: winter runs November to February with averages of 15 to 20 °C, and summer runs June to September when temperatures “can reach 45 °C or higher”. The best windows for warm-weather activity are early April to early May and late October to late November. Summer humidity runs 40 to 60 per cent.

Best time of day to be out

Work from the month rather than from habit. In winter any hour is comfortable and your constraint is daylight. Sunset at 16:46 in November and December means an afternoon arrival shows you a lit city rather than a bright one, which is a different photograph rather than a worse one.

In summer your usable hours are the early morning and everything after about six in the evening. The souq is at its best after dark in any season, and it is the stop that gains most from an evening departure. The one thing an evening route costs you is the museum interiors, which close at 19:00.

What to wear, and what the tours provide

Wear something loose and light that covers shoulders and knees, in any month. From May to September add a hat and sunglasses, and expect to want the air-conditioned car more than you think you will. In December and January bring a layer for after sunset, when the temperature drops sharply once the sun goes.

Bottled water is included on almost every departure compared here, and several operators will hand you an umbrella for shade in summer. What none of them provide is footwear. The souq is uneven underfoot and the desert route is sand, so the shoes are the one thing you have to get right yourself.
