Doha Layover: Leave or Stay?
Short answer. Under six hours, stay in the terminal. Over eight, go into the city. Between the two it depends on what you have already done that day — Hamad International Airport is genuinely one of the best in the world to be stuck in, which makes this a real choice rather than an obvious one.
Most layover advice assumes leaving is always better. In Doha that is not obvious, because the airport you would be leaving has a rainforest in it. Here is the case for both, and the point where the balance tips.

The case for staying
Hamad International Airport is not a place you endure. ORCHARD is a 6,000 square metre indoor tropical garden with over 300 trees and a 575 square metre water feature. The Oryx Airport Hotel holds a 25-metre swimming pool, a gym, a squash court and a spa. There are sleep pods, showers and quiet rooms, plus a multi-sensory lounge for children with autism. More than 200 places to eat and shop sit around all of it, including a souq built in the traditional style.
It was named Best Airport in the Middle East for the eleventh time, and Best Airport Shopping for the third consecutive year, at the 2025 Skytrax awards. The case for going
You are twenty minutes from a city most people never see. The old market is substantially older than the skyline behind it, and the waterfront is a horseshoe of towers across the water. The whole circuit takes four hours door to door, with somebody else driving.
The cost is small: $45 a head upwards, and entry is free for over 102 nationalities or QAR 100 otherwise. The operators also remove the two hardest parts. They meet you at arrivals and return you to departures, so neither transfer is a problem you have to solve at speed.
What tips it
- Hours. Six is the threshold Qatar's own transit service draws. Below it, stay.

The middle case, honestly
Six to eight hours is where it is genuinely close. You will get the souq, the waterfront and the towers, and you will be watching the clock for the last of it. If you have slept, go. If you have just come off a red-eye with another one ahead, the garden and a shower will do more for the rest of your trip than another skyline photograph.

What separates them is not cost but recovery. A tour spends energy you may want for the next leg. The terminal spends a city you are already standing next to.
